Whether you are looking for your next great success, been laid off, needing part-time work or looking for a 2nd job, the search can sometimes be overwhelming. Especially when you need your resume to standout above the many others out there. I know because I’ve had to re-invent myself many times!! So I am sharing 3 “out of the box” steps to insure you find exactly what you need faster!

Step 1) Spread the word: Let people know you are looking for a job and what kind of job you are looking for. Even if you are desperate for ANYTHING, at least be specific about the type of environment and boss you are looking for. The more specific you are when asking for help in seeking a job, the easier it will be for someone to think of whom they can introduce you to.
For Example: Say” I’m in need of a flexible part-time job working for someone that is overwhelmed and could appreciate a can-do self starter to make their life easier. Who do you know that is a business owner, in Sales Management or in Project Management that works way to many hours that I can speak with?” We might not always know who’s hiring, but we can ALWAYS know someone that is too busy, in sales, in HR, etc. That introduction could be vital in defining what you bring to the table to help them out. If they are hiring, great, if not ask for a referral. You WILL be recognized for your initiative.
Places to spread the word: Your church, with Friends, Relatives, vendors you use in your day like your bank, hairdresser etc. and at networking groups. Check out www.abwa.org for a group in your area.

Step 2) Ask for help: Make sure your resume stands out. You MUST put your best face forward so have a professional review your resume. You can search “resume help” on the internet or check your local library for resume workshops. Also, seek advice from those in the field you want to work in. For example, if you are looking for Sales and you know a Sales Manager, ask them to critique your resume. Ask them to tell you if they would hire you from that resume. If so, why. That way you can know what to bring out when interviewing. If not, why not and what are their suggestions for improvement. When done, ask them if there is anyone they know they can send that resume to. Now that getting help and spreading the word at the same time!

Step 3) Never turn down an interview: An interview is your chance to hone your skills answering the tough questions and to learn about various job environments. It’s your chance to interview that person and the company. You may not like the sound of a job on paper, but you are assuming you know all about it. Often an interview will reveal something very different about the job you didn’t realize that does fit for you. Moreover, if the job isn’t for you, there might be OTHER openings that the interviewer may feel you are better suited for. However, if it’s not a fit, ask them to refer you to anyone they know that is hiring or other networking groups or websites you can use in your job search. Interviewers are great resources for helping you find a job even if they don’t hire you!! And sometimes, asking that follow up question will get you hired!

I hope that helps. I know times are tough. But don’t quit. Also, if you know someone that is in need of work, please have them contact me to schedule an interview or have them come to our Job fair on 7/23. You can see details on my events page. I’m hiring 6 new team members and am scheduling interviews in the next 2 weeks. If we’re not a fit for each other, I will give candidates exposure to the networking contacts I have…some 5000!! Happy Hunting!
